CVM DEPUTY DIRECTOR DEPARTS FROM THE CENTER
On February 1, 1999, Dr. Michael J. Blackwell, Deputy Director is leaving FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) to assume the position of Chief of Staff to Dr. David Satcher, Surgeon General, U.S. Public Health Service (PHS).
Dr. Blackwell has had a long, distinguished career in FDA, serving three times in the Center for Veterinary Medicine, the last four and a half years as Deputy Director, as well as a number of years in FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). Dr. Blackwell has also served the past four years as Chief Veterinary Officer of PHS.
CVM has started the process to recruit a new Deputy Director for the Center. Until a new deputy is selected, Dr. G.A. (Bert) Mitchell will serve as CVM Deputy Director. Dr. Mitchell, who has been with CVM since 1988, is currently CVM's Associate Director for Policy and Regulations.
