Subject: [Users] NERSC Archive HPSS downtime for upgrade 12/2/08
Author: Eric Hjort <ELHjort_at_lbl.gov>
Date: 2008-10-22 16:26:38
Greetings NERSC HPSS user, This announcement concerns an upcoming downtime for an upgrade of the Archive or User HPSS system. This upgrade will result in the system being unavailable beginning at 08:00 on Dec 2, 2008 through 08:00 on Dec 4, 2008. The other NERSC HPSS system, Regent or Backup, underwent this upgrade in September and will not be affected. Some important details: HPSS authentication and accounts will now be integrated with the NERSC Information Management (NIM) server. You will no longer access auth.nersc.gov or utilize DCE usernames or passwords. Any password used on Archive HPSS prior to the upgrade will no longer work. Instead, you will need to generate a new password for use with Archive HPSS, and place the new password in your .netrc file. After the upgrade, HSI, pftp and FTP clients will all use the .netrc file for avoiding having to type your password for access to HPSS. 1. Downloading new HPSS clients: If you use HSI or HTAR from a non-NERSC computational system, you must download a new client from https://www.nersc.gov/projects/ download/hpss/ Failure to download a new client will result in a failed authentication request. You need a v3.4+ HSI and HTAR client to communicate with HPSS after the upgrade. The NERSC computational systems are updated by the Mass Storage Group and will already have the new HSI, HTAR and pftp clients upon completion of the upgrade. 2. New authentication method - generating a new HPSS password: Every user must generate a new password to access Archive HPSS after the upgrade. To do so: (a.) Use a web browser to access http://nim.nersc.gov (b.) Login using your NIM password (same as other NERSC production systems) (c.) Select new option under Action called Generate HPSS Token (d.) For access from any NERSC system, use the encrypted string provided at the top of the frame. For access from a system outside of NERSC, select the link to enter an IP address and enter the IP address of the system you access HPSS from to generate a new encrypted string. (e.) Use your NIM username and this new password to login to HPSS with HSI, HTAR, pftp or FTP. You may place the string in a .netrc file in your home directory for HSI, HTAR, pftp, and some FTP clients to use for auto-authenticated access to HPSS. For details, see http://www.nersc.gov/nusers/systems/hpss/accounts_passwords.php 3. Note the new location of home directories. Previous to the upgrade, a user's home directory could be located anywhere in the HPSS namespace. After the upgrade, home directories will now be in /nersc/<first initial of moniker>/<moniker>. For example, user 'franky' will be in /nersc/f/franky after logging into Archive HPSS. We have moved your home directory to this location and placed a symbolic link from your old homedir to this location. If you have scripts that hardcode or reference the old path, please update them accordingly. Project directories will remain unchanged. 4. Change in startup parameters for HSI and HTAR: When using HSI or HTAR, users could previously execute: $ hsi (to access Archive) or $ hsi hpss (to access Regent) With the new versions of HSI and HTAR, users must specify the HPSS system they want to connect to with the -s option: $ hsi -s archive or $ hsi -s hpss _______________________________________________ Users mailing list Users@nersc.gov
