From: avid fartash [avidfartash@hotmail.com] Sent: Monday, May 14, 2001 4:17 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Petition 98P-0151/cp1 The purpose of this message is to respectfully urge the FDA to grant the above mentioned petition to probhibit the slaughter of downed animals for the following reasons: * Animals who are too sick to stand pose a health threat and should not be allowed to enter the human food chain * Downed animals cannot possibly be moved humanely, therefore they are typically pushed with tractors or dragged with chains, inhumane processes that cause injuries ranging from bruises and abrasions to broken bones and torn ligaments * Downed animals make up a very small percentage of animals slaughtered, and prohibiting their marketing will cause no undue economic hardship I thank you for your consideration and support.
