I require the right to know that the food we eat: a.. has been tested and proven safe for the most vulnerable of us, that is, for infants and children and b.. has not harmed the environment nor the workers who grow and process it. Until such time as those two requirements are fulfilled for genetically engineered food according to strict standards, I require that all genetically engineered food be clearly labeled as such, whether it be fresh produce or as part of processed food. Until such time as GE food labeling is mandatory, I require that there be no restrictions on voluntary labeling, either positive or negative. If genetic engineers and growers of genetically engineered food can prove that they have produced a safe, superior product for the most vulnerable of us, that is, infants and children, then labeling will be to their benefit as well as mine.
