As part of the ongoing
effort to maintain a status of the Archive, Shirley
attended an Emergency Preparedness and Recovery Class
held at New Mexico's new State Library, Archives and
Records Center in Santa Fe in October. Emergency preparedness
is important not only to be ready for large- scale
disasters, like fire or flood, but for more common,
small-scale problems as well. Most libraries
and archives are forced to deal with a number
of small emergencies affecting parts of their collection
each year - incidents such as a pipe leak or break,
vandalism, or extreme temperature and humidity levels
when the air conditioner or heating system fails for
a period of time. In one incident, related by
a workshop participant, the flat roof of a building
in which archival material was stored had accumulated
too much snow and caved in. No one had thought
of shoveling off some of the snow ahead of time (which
could have been part of their Disaster Preparedness
Plan). One segment of the class was a tour of
the new facility in which class participants did a
risk assessment of the building for areas of vulnerability.
This class raised awareness of issues in caring
for Sandia's historic photo collections and other
records.
