In the Spotlight
Four Indian Kings
In 1710, four leaders of the
Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) alliance traveled to the Court of Queen
Anne in London to ask for support against the French. Londoners
treated the delegates as celebrities and Queen Anne commissioned
their portraits – the earliest known surviving oil
portraits of Native people of North America. See these regal likenesses online or at the
National Portrait Gallery.

Correction
In last month's issue, the "In The Spotlight" feature was
incorrectly titled "Distinguished Service Medal." The article
actually featured the Distinguished Service Cross. Thank you to
our diligent readers for alerting us to this error. |
