Nov. 25, 2008 - The "housing crisis has kept thousands of older Americans who need support and care from moving into retirement communities or assisted-living centers, effectively stranding them in their own homes," the New York Times reports. Unable to sell their homes in the declining market, many elderly U.S. residents cannot afford to buy into retirement homes that require a $100,000 to $500,000 up front payment to move in. With Senior Citizen Deaths from Falls Increasing an Expert Suggests Home Modifications

November 20, 2006 – Deadly falls for senior citizens – both men and women – increased by more than 55 percent from 1993 to 2003, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This, and updated figures clearly establish falling as the leading cause of injury deaths among people 65 and older. Fengyi Kuo, assistant professor of occupational therapy at the University of Indianapolis, says the solution to this problem at home is safety awareness and implementation of relatively simple changes to make the homes of older people more fall-proof. Del Webb Ranks Highest in Satisfying Buyers in Active Adult Communities

Half of active adult buyers found in only six U.S. markets

September 14, 2006 - Del Webb ranks highest in customer satisfaction among the largest active adult community home builders, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 New-Home Builder Customer Satisfaction Study released yesterday. These are communities targeted to buyers who are 55 years old and older. Among active adult buyers, the survey found, more than one-half are located in six markets: Phoenix (18%), Chicago (10%), Inland Empire, Calif. (9%), Las Vegas (6%), Philadelphia (6%) and Washington D.C. (6%). Read more...

April 28, 2006 – The homes of about 7,000 low-income senior citizens will get a free rehab tomorrow as part of Rebuilding Together's National Rebuild Day. About 9,000 homes of elderly and disabled low-income homeowners will be refurbished but about two-thirds will house senior citizens, according to Patty Johnson, president of the non-profit organization. Boomers, Seniors Drive Surge in Vacation Home Buying

Second homes, investment buys were 36 percent of all home sales in 2004

March 1, 2005 – The older baby boomers and senior citizens, more closely identified as persons 55 or older and earning and average of $71,000 per year, were the driving force in a surge of vacation home buying in 2004 – up 16.3 percent from 2003 and 13 percent of all homes bought in 2004. This surge, however, was topped by investment home purchases, which were 23 percent of all sales and up 14.4 percent, according to a new study. Read more...

Editor's Note: I had just returned from visiting my Alzheimer's stricken Mom, who is in a nursing home near my office, when I opened my email, which is always bulging with news releases. This one caught my attention. As the senior boom nears, we need more focus on communities like this one.
