NERSC File System Outage Wednesday, May 30 |

Greetings NERSC User,
Tomorrow (Wed May 30) there will be a file system outage that
will affect all NERSC compute platforms. The NERSC Global
Filesystem (NGF), which provides the /project file system,
will be taken down for a 3-hour maintenance at 10:00 AM, PDT.
This message provides details on the impact of this maintenance.
Seaborg, Bassi, and Jacquard are currently not starting any
job whose requested time limit would cause them to run beyond
10:00 tomorrow morning. This results in many nodes becoming
available for short-running jobs. This is a good opportunity
to get quick turnaround for short-duration (even high-concurrency)
batch jobs.
At 10:00 tomorrow morning, all three machines will have completed
their batch processing. All processes on Jacquard and DaVinci
will be terminated; those two machines will be going down for
their own scheduled maintenance (unrelated to the NGF maintenance).
On Seaborg and Bassi, all interactive processes that are accessing
/project will be terminated at 10:00, and /project will be unmounted.
From 10:00 until /project is unmounted, no batch jobs will run; this
includes parallel interactive and debug jobs. We expect this to
last no longer than 30 minutes.
Once /project has been unmounted, scheduling of parallel interactive
and debug jobs will resume. NOTE: any job attempting to access
/project will fail! Scheduling of "normal" batch jobs will also
resume at this time, but will be done "by hand" to guarantee that
no batch jobs fail due to the absence of /project. When the NGF
maintenance is over, /project will be remounted on Seaborg and
Bassi (no interruption of jobs necessary), and regulare LoadLeveler
job scheduling will resume.
For current status of all systems during the NGF outage, please
