Subject: Molecular Foundry Workshop at Berkeley Lab, April 4-5, 2002

Whither NanoscienceBeyond Building Blocks to Complex Functional Assemblies We cordially invite you to attend a workshop to explore the future of nanoscience research and the planning of the Berkeley Lab Molecular Foundry. It will be held at Berkeley on April 4 and 5, 2002, adjourning at noon on the 5th. The Molecular Foundry is a Department of Energy user facility that is planned for Berkeley Lab. Its underlying premise is that nanoscience research is advancing beyond the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured building blocks, to the primary challenge of the next decade: the construction of complex functional assemblies of these building blocks. Further, the field is becoming increasingly multidisciplinary, involving both soft and hard nanostructured materials. As a result, individual laboratories will have difficulty maintaining state-of-the-art expertise and instrumentation in all areas required for pursuit of their research interests. The Molecular Foundry is designed to address these issues. The unique breadth of its facilities- Inorganic Nanostructures Synthesis -A.P. Alivisatos, Director Nanofabrication -J. Bokor, Director Organic Synthesis -J. M. J. Frechet, Director Biopolymer Synthesis -J.M.J Frechet and C. R. Bertozzi, Directors Plant, Microbial, Mammalian Cell Culture -C. R. Bertozzi, Director Theory -S. G. Louie Director Imaging and Characterization -M. B. Salmeron, Director will be available to researchers from the university, industry and government laboratory community who are expert in one or more areas, but not in others. Each fully equipped facility will be maintained by a full-time dedicated staff, which will be available to assist users or collaborate with them. The workshop will have two parts. The first session will be dedicated to plenary talks by internationally recognized leaders in the field, exploring the challenges we face in the construction of multi-component functional structures and devices. The second session will be dedicated to small group meetings in which attendees will discuss their views of how the Foundry facilities can be designed and operated to be of greatest value to them as a community of users. This will be an especially important session because the Department of Energy has provided, in the FY 2002 budget, substantial funding to begin the design of the Foundry, and this is the most critical time for us to hear advice from the community. The program will also include tours and presentations of research at the Advanced Light Source, the National Center for Electron Microscopy and the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center, the three existing Berkeley Lab national user facilities, which will be intimately linked, through facilitated user access, to the Foundry. To receive the second announcement for this workshop, with detailed registration information, please fill out the attached interest form. If connected to the Internet, you can submit the form directly from your email software or Web browser. If your email software does not support HTML forms, you may find the online version at http://foundry.lbl.gov more convenient. This site will provide more detailed information about the workshop as it becomes available. We look forward to seeing you in Berkeley in April and hearing your thoughts on this exciting new venture.
