Overview:
The course provides further development of skills in reading, writing and vocabulary using foreign newspapers. The course is designed for participants with a good knowledge of the language. ACE College Credit Recommendation Service reviewed.
Prerequisites:
Intermediate Russian II (RUSS2211E) or equivalent.

Objective: To provide students with practice in reading, writing and speaking high-intermediate level Russian.

 

Learning Outcome: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to interact with native Russian speakers in a variety of situations and to read and write Russian with increased fluency.

 

Instruction: Major topics covered in the course include playing games - играть в + accusative; проводить свободиое время; playing musical instruments - играть на + instrumental; additional uses of the instrumental case; third person plural for passing/impersonal meaning; свой; увлекаться чем, интересоваться чем, стат кем, быть кем; sending things - посылать/послать, отправлять/отправит; from - от vs. из vs. с; класть/положить, ставить/по-; скучать по кому/чему; The whole (весь) vs. everyone (все) versus everything (всё); speaking in generalities; descriptions of well-being and sickness; хотет, чтобы + past tense; verbs of asking - спрашивать/спросить vs. просить/попросить; prepositions of direction and location; making hypotheses - если бы clauses; time expressions; друг друга and a review of adverbs and adjectives.

Vocabulary topics will include invitations; hobbies; sports; post office; internet; personal ads; parts of the body; illness; medical services; health advice; holidays; meeting and greeting; making toasts and writing holiday greetings.

Methods of instruction include lecture, discussion, classroom exercises, presentations, tests and final examination.
