NEW SANDIA HISTORY TO BE PUBLISHED
The new one-volume history of Sandia entitled
Sandia National Laboratories: A History of Exceptional
Service in the National Interest is scheduled for publication
in June. Written by former Corporate Historian Leland Johnson,
the 400-page, profusely illustrated book provides a sweeping
history of Sandia from the late 1940s to the Lockheed Martin
era. The fact-laden narrative documents nearly 50 years
of Sandia's work in weapon design, energy research, waste
management, and scientific research, and emphasizes the
roles of the talented men and women who made these accomplishments
possible. A reference copy will be sent to each department
and above.
The National Atomic Museum (NAM) has agreed
to distribute the book and is offering special rates for
Sandia employees ($12.50) and retirees ($10.00). On-site
contractors may purchase the book at the employee rate.
(The retail price of the book is $17.) To reserve your copy,
fill out the coupon on page 4 and return it to the National
Atomic Museum.
Employee copies will be delivered to the
mail stops and no postage and handling fee is involved.
Retirees can save the postage and handling charge of $5.00
by picking up their copies at the NAM store. An announcement
will appear in the Lab News when books are available
for pickup.
PAPER PRESENTED
Corporate historian Carl J. Mora presented
a paper entitled "Bridging the Cold War and the 21st Century:
Chronicling the History of Sandia National Laboratories"
at "Looking Backward, Looking Forward," the annual meeting
of The Society for History in the Federal Government and
the National Archives Assembly held in College Park, Maryland
on April 3-4, 1997. Research historian Rebecca Ullrich introduced
the speaker and participated in the discussion following
the presentation.
SAVE THE RAW MATERIAL! WE CAN’T DO HISTORY WITHOUT YOU
The History Program is dependent upon the
documents, photographs, and other records saved by Sandia
employees in the past to produce interesting and informative
books, papers, and exhibits. Sandia's Recorded Information
Management Department has established a set of guidelines
for all of Sandia's records (with the approval of DOE
and the National Archives) to assist you in determining
what to save, what to store, and for how long. For example,
documents of historical value are transferred to the Corporate
Archives when they are no longer required by the original
owners.
If you need assistance in understanding
your responsibilities in managing Sandia's records or
in using Sandia's Records Retention & Disposition Schedule,
you can attend training sessions arranged by Sandia's
Records Managers. Training is ongoing. In addition to
the upcoming training sessions, training can be tailored
to your organization's specific records management needs.
To sign up for either of these training sessions or to
arrange specialized training for your group, please call
Ruby Cochrell at 284-3469 or Linda Cusimano at 844-4980.
More information, as well as access to
the Records Retention & Disposition Schedule, can be obtained
through the Org. 15102 website on the Sandia internal
web.

NEWS FROM CORPORATE ARCHIVES
Corporate Archives clerical support,
Paul Gallegos, retired on April 17 after 30 years with
Sandia. We are pleased to announce that his replacement
is Shirley Morris, who was formerly in Department 1471.
Shirley will continue with the indexing of Sandia's
Still Photo collection, scanning and indexing selected
images, and generally assisting in the Corporate Archives.
Employees often recognize the value of
their records - they identify their historical materials
and then donate them to the Corporate Archives. A few
new collections are listed here. Retiree Herb Filusch
provided documentation on the Readiness Program, including
photos of test vehicles; and information on Sandia's
satellite work, including mission patches that will
be retained in our artifact collection. Carl S. Smith
(9784) donated information on several projects, including:
an early design of a water penetrator; the radar target
pedestal used for testing weapons at the radar site
(this pedestal allowed a weapon to be tested for radar
detection in pitch, roll, and yaw positions); and the
RTG chill caster that made material then used in transistors
for the Radioisotopic Thermogenerator. Jerry Cuderman,
recent retiree, donated documentation on weapons effects
studies for the Readiness Program_with photos of the
Fast Atom Accelerator Facility designed and built as
part of the research effort; underground test, above
ground test, and nuclear waste management activities;
and High Energy Gas Fracturing (HEGF) Research.
All of these collections enhance the
value of the Corporate Archives and contribute to Sandia's
historical record. Contact Myra O'Canna at 844-6315
if you have materials of historical interest to donate
to the Corporate Archives, or if you have any other
inquiries.
