HDF I/O Library at NERSC

The HDF (Hierarchical Data Format) is a multi-object file format that facilitates the transfer of various types of scientific data between machines. In addition to the library a number of command line utilities are also available. For a full description of this library, visit the web site at NCSA.

The HDF files written with older versions can be read with the default version. HDF is also forward compatible, at least in regards to the data. Metadata, such as attributes, may not be readable by previous releases, but the data should be. For more information on backward and forward compatibility see the HDF data compatibility table .
