The Animal Welfare Institute's Humane Husbandry Standards for Pigs are followed by over 200 farms in the American Midwest.  The farmers who adhere to these Standards are helping AWI to demonstrate that animals raised for food are sentient creatures capable of enjoying their lives.  Pigs are very social animals with learning capabilities similar to dogs.  AWI's Husbandry Standards take the natural behavior of pigs into account.  Farmers find that by allowing pigs to behave naturally they raise healthier animals.

If every consumer demands that animals raised for food are treated humanly, animal factories could not exist. You can make a difference!  Choose food from humane family farms instead of animal factories.

The independent family farmers who follow the AWI Husbandry Standards for Pigs market through the Niman Ranch Company.  Niman Ranch products are available at natural food stores including Fresh Fields in the Mid-Atlantic Region, Harry's Farmers Markets in Atlanta, and Trader Joe's, as well as through Williams and Sonoma catalogs, over the internet, and at hundreds of restaurants throughout the U.S.

Each farm is a family farm.
