Sandia's Special Instrumentation Program

In addition to our standard weapons telemetry work, we apply our telemetry technology to special projects in which external customers have come to ask our help.   These are typically in the recovery of data from very difficult field environments.   Examples of these work are:

  1. Acoustic receivers for the oil industry to be used in wells at depths of up to 5,000 meters and temperatures of up to 200 degrees C.  We did this work using commercial components and special assembly techniques that could survive this heat.

  2. Underwater instrumentation and acoustic telemetry to measure earthquakes on the ocean floor.

  3. Measurements on a submarine shaft in the mud tank area of the vessel with magnetic power and signal connections to the instrumentation.

  4. Measurements of deep space gamma rays from high altitude balloons.

These are just samples of the special work that we do to recover data from difficult and unusual environments.
