The KTF network covers a whole range of possibilities
The network installed at the KTF comprises a sophisticated local area network (LAN) connected to the Defense Research and Engineering Network (DREN). The DREN is a robust communication network that incorporates the best operational capabilities of both the DoD and the commercial telecommunications infrastructure. Being connected to the DREN allows KTF access to DOE facilities, DoD facilities, and the Internet's World Wide Web (WWW).

The KTF LAN

A smart switch router connected directly to the DREN controls the KTF LAN. Several switches, hubs, and bridges connected to the router provide network access to each building and office within the KTF boundary. Currently, the LAN is FAST ETHERNET (100 mb/s) with the capability to run asynchronous transfer mode (ATM). Several PCs and one Hewlett-Packard® (HP) server are also connected to the LAN. The server monitors and controls the network, and serves as an anonymous FTP site to transfer data to and from KTF.

Easy Mission Data Download

During rocket flights, onboard telemetry collects mission data. Sandia-sponsoring organizations such as the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command (USASMDC), the US Navy Program Executive Office Theater Surface Combatants, and their associated analysis laboratories desire this data and can conveniently connect to the server to download it immediately after a flight test. Some operations at KTF require that data be exchanged in near real time between KTF, PMRF, and other ranges such as the Kwajalein Missile Range (KMR) and Maui Space Surveillance Station (MSSS). Recent operations have proven that data can be sent over the WWW using a virtual private network (VPN) in near real time. KTF also runs a Central Computing Facility (CCF).
