Worker and Public Health Communication

For more than a decade, the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) has helped the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other federal, state, and local agencies protect and educate their workers and the public through effective communication initiatives.

ORISE brings a broad base of skills and capabilities in health and safety research, communication, training, and technology to the table. We have a proven history of successful collaboration with our clients to develop, implement, and disseminate health communication concepts, strategies, and products.

Our areas of expertise include:

Public Communication
ORISE provides comprehensive communications assistance that helps federal, local, and state agencies educate the public on health and safety issues. Our efforts to craft and deliver the right message using the most effective methods can ultimately save lives, improve health, and enhance well-being.

Research-Evaluation-Guidance
ORISE helps federal, state, and local agencies develop effective and formative research studies, surveys, questionnaires, and materials that address health issues faced by employers or the public.

Training & Education
ORISE health communications experts work alongside instructional designers, graphic artists, and multimedia developers to create customized training and educational materials on worker health and safety topics as well as environmental health and toxicology and consumer health.

Interactive Web Applications
ORISE capitalizes on the benefits of technology to create innovative products that can be used to efficiently and cost-effectively train workers or educate the public.

Public Health Preparedness
As federal, state, and local public health agencies face the need to communicate and prepare for today's health threats, they turn to ORISE for our expertise in training and educating our nation’s citizens on hot health topics such as the pandemic flu and biological terrorism.

Outreach & Promotions
Just as certain health issues are specific to certain populations, so must be the messages related to those topics. ORISE is respected for our ability to use technology, training, and other tools to target those communities with the type of information they need to improve their health and well-being.

Community call centers will experience a surge in demands for care and information during an influenza pandemic or other public health emergency. ORISE and the CDC’s Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion recently assembled a stakeholder meeting to produce a workbook to assist local communities and call centers in their emergency response. ORISE is collaborating with working groups from the meeting to complete this workbook by April 2009.
