Progress Toward Elimination of Health Disparities

The following discussion highlights progress toward the elimination of health disparities. The disparities are illustrated in the Disparities Table (see Figure 17-2), which displays information about disparities among select populations for which data were available for assessment.

In this focus area, only the blood donations objective (17-6) had population-based data available for assessing progress toward the elimination of health disparities. As the Disparities Table shows, no significant disparities existed within any of the characteristics examined (race and ethnicity, gender, education level, or disability status). Studies of donor behavior and motivation12, 13 suggest that education about donation, access to donation facilities, and targeted recruitment practices all influence donation likelihood.
