UNR Grant To Study Recycling Spent Nuclear Fuel

Monday, November 17, 2008

The University of Nevada, Reno has received a $2.7 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to study recycling spent nuclear fuel.

Officials with UNR's Center for Materials Research say part of the project will involve exposing spent fuels from commercial reactors to extreme high temperatures...

Researchers say the procedure removes toxic materials and allows uranium to be reused.

Scientists say the process could be an alternative to having to store nuclear waste for millions of years, such as at the Department of Energy's proposed Yucca Mountain repository near Las Vegas.
