A letter from the Chairman

Welcome to the Internet home of We the People, the NEH’s program to reinvigorate the teaching, study, and understanding of America’s history and founding principles.  We launched We the People with President Bush in 2002 because democracy must be defined before it can be defended. Our government of, by, and for the people requires educated and thoughtful citizens who understand the ideals and institutions that have shaped our country.

On this Web site, you can learn more about We the People-sponsored projects and initiatives, including award-winning documentaries and museum exhibitions, as well as special programs for libraries, schools, and teachers. I encourage you to use the resources you find here to join the NEH in this vital effort. Working together, we can form a new generation of good citizens—citizens who know our nation’s past and principles, and who will use that knowledge to add their own chapters to America’s remarkable story.

Sincerely,

Bruce Cole
