Subject: NUG teleconf today June 19

Dear NUG, The next monthly teleconference is today, Thursday, June 19, at 9:00 AM Pacific Time. On the agenda so far: - NUGEX chair and vice chair selection - Bassi use (submitted by Angus Macnab - * see more details below) - plans for the future growth of systems (submitted by James Vary) You may bring additional topics to the meeting. To participate: Toll Numbers: USA & International Callers 1-203-480-4547 TollFree Numbers: USA 866-773-1714 Participant Passcode: 996820 OSF staff please come to OSF 238. * Bassi use: Angs MacNab submitted: My observations over the last 2-3 months are as follows: 1) There appear to be 2-3 users who are submitting "dynamic" scripts. I'm not sure if these are cron jobs, but they appear quite effective as the users are almost always running on the machine using 25-75% of the resources. 2) There appears to be a large amount of Bassi use from repos with > 5 million MPP hours who are not using Franklin yet. 3) The limits on holding jobs for no more than 7 days does not seem to be active... I noticed that a couple of my holds have remained for a very long time so I'm certainly not immune from noticing and using this "feature". I'm wondering if the following ideas could help to free up the Bassi queue and get more people running on Franklin, which appears to be somewhat underutilized. 1)Allocating some consultant support to those repos with more than, say, 5 million MPP hours to encourage them to port code to Franklin. NERSC could perhaps initiate this interaction. 2) Enforcing the hold time limits on Bassi 3) Limiting the use of cron submitted jobs e.g. "dynamic" scripts Regardless of the outcome, I think this might be worthwhile to discuss at the next NUGEx. -- Francesca Verdier email: fverdier@lbl.gov Department Head, NERSC Services phone: 510-486-7193
