Science, Engineering, and Economic Growth in Africa
Development Cooperation Challenges and Opportunities
On January 9, 2009 CRDF will co-sponsor a public lecture and discussion by Calestous Juma, Professor of the Practice of International Development at Harvard Kennedy School. The lecture will be hosted by the National Academy of Sciences and will explore the role that emerging technologies can play in fostering economic growth and improving human welfare in Africa.
Fixing the Crisis in Diplomatic Readiness

The concluding event of the STEP Business Partner Grant Competition is the Venture Forum. Internationalization of Research and Graduate Studies and its Implications in the Transatlantic Context

Science, Diplomacy and International Cooperation
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) will be hosting a conference, "Science, Diplomacy and International Cooperation," on October 28, 2008 in Washington, DC to discuss science diplomacy and raise the profile of the use of international science cooperation as a method for relationship building and engagement.
CRDF President and CEO, Cathleen Campbell will be participating on a panel called, "Science Organization and Science Diplomacy."
Pan-REC Conference
The 8th Pan-REC Conference will take place on October 20-21, 2008 in Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia. Pan-REC is an annual event, where the 20 Research and Education Centers of CRDF's Basic Research and Higher Education (BRHE) program gather to present scientific research and share experience. CRDF CIB Senior Technical Advisor Marilyn Pifer will be attending. Sergey Egorov, the Director of CRDF Russia, will be presenting. This event is invitation only.
Business Partnership Program Venture Conferences
The STEP Business Partnership Grants competition, conducted by the U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF), promotes research and development partnerships between companies and teams of researchers/scientists to develop new commercial opportunities of economic benefit to both parties. The concluding event of the STEP Business Partner Grant Competition is the Venture Conference.

SRA International 2008 Annual Meeting
Society for Research Administration International (SRA) will host its 2008 Annual Meeting from October 9-13 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, MD. CRDF GO&PSS Program Manager, Heather Fernuik will be presenting "WS24: How to Manage Multi-Partner International Projects" at the conference.
Russian Venture Forum
The 2008 Russian Venture Forum, co-sponsored by CRDF, will take place Oct. 8-10 in St. Petersburg, Russia, and will bring together leading local and international investors and innovative high-tech business leaders. CRDF President and CEO Cathy Campbell, a member of CRDF’s Board of Directors and CRDF Treasurer Fred Johnson, and CRDF Program Manager Irina Mitchell will all be presenting at the Forum.
Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Odessa: Issues, Challenges and Solutions
CRDF is among the co-organizers of an international conference on best practices in innovation policies and strategies, which will take place October 1-5 in Odessa, Ukraine. Salzburg Global Seminars, Odessa National University and the Odessa regional government are also co-organizing the conference.

Improving U.S.-Russian Relations Through Cooperation in Higher Education and Research
This seminar will consist of two panel discussions. The first panel will discuss educational and research cooperation in the fields of humanities and social sciences and the second panel will discuss cooperation in the natural and physical sciences. BIO International Convention
With support from the U.S. Department of State's BioIndustry Initiative, CRDF will sponsor the attendance of 16 scientists from the former Soviet Union at the BIO International Convention to be held June 17-20, 2008 in San Diego. Hosted by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, the convention will feature keynotes and sessions from key policymakers, scientists, CEOs, and celebrities. The convention also includes hundreds of sessions covering biotech trends, policy issues and technological innovations and the world's largest biotechnology exhibition.
International Geodynamic Research Center Fourth International Symposium
The International Geodynamic Research Center (IGRC) is hosting the Fourth International Symposium dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Research Station RAS and the 10th anniversary of IGRC. CRDF Senior Program Manager Kathleen Meehan Coop and CRDF Moscow representative Naya Smorodinskaya will participate from CRDF.
International Brucellosis Workshop
Brucellosis as a trans-boundary infection of animals and humans which needs to be managed by cooperative efforts of different countries
Funded by the U.S. Department of State’s BioIndustry Initiative Program, the International Brucellosis Workshop in Serpukhov in June 2008 will be the first event bringing together brucellosis experts from 12 countries to discuss disease eradication approaches in trans-boundary areas.

Higher Education Summit for Global Development
CRDF President and CEO Cathy Campbell will participate in the Higher Education for Summit for Global Development, an invitation-only event held in Washington DC, between April 29-30, 2008. At the summit, the U.S. government will advance its global vision of higher education development cooperation and move its shared interests with its partners to a higher priority on the national agenda. It will be convened by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings.
Career Skills for Researchers
CRDF will present a short course on Career Skills for Researchers in Tbilisi, Georgia, April 15 - 16. The course will cover grant writing, publication of peer-reviewed research articles, and making conference presentations. The training is sponsored by the Georgian National Science Foundation with logistical support from CRDF’s partner foundation in Georgia, the Georgia Research and Development Foundation (GRDF).
Salzburg Global Seminar
John Modzelewski will represent CRDF and also serve as a rapporteur at the Salzburg Global Seminar held in Salzburg, Austria. CRDF will participate in the upcoming session: Innovation in Knowledge-based Economies: Accelerating the Benefits, held April 13-18, 2008.
2nd Conference of the Middle East and North Africa Newborn Screening Initiative: Partnerships for Sustainable Newborn Screening Infrastructure and Research Opportunities

The conference, better known as the Malta-III conference, will serve to identify unique opportunities for collaboration to meet challenges for economic and social development in the region, including science education, water and the environment, medicinal chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology and solar energy. The conference will include plenary lectures by several Nobel Laureates, and workshops on the specific topics mentioned above. Almost eighty scientists from fifteen countries will be represented at the conference. CRDF Senior Program Manager, Charlie Dunlap, will be attending the conference on behalf of CRDF.
The Malta Conferences were conceived by 2007 CRDF George Brown Award winner, Dr. Zafra Lerman. Dr. Lerman is the head of the Institute for Science Education and Science Communication at Columbia College Chicago.

First Annual US-Russia Business Angel Symposium

Some of Russia’s leading Russian business angels and technology entrepreneurs will be participating in the First Annual US-Russia Business Angel Symposium, a joint project of the US-Russia Chamber of Commerce of New England, the Russian Venture Capital Association, and Babson College. This all day event will provide interactive training sessions, case studies, and networking opportunities with Russian counterparts, led by a faculty of leading US and Russian business and legal experts and investors.

An International Workshop
The Future of the Nuclear Security Environment in 2015 is an international workshop sponsored by the U.S. National Academies and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Rose Gottemoeller, CRDF Board member and Director, Carnegie Moscow Center, is serving as co-chair of the National Academies - Russian Academy of Sciences Joint Committee on the Future of the Nuclear Security Environment in 2015. CRDF Senior Vice President Eric Novotny will be serving on a panel entitled "Full Partnership – Sharing Strategic, Management and Financial Responsibilities" and making a presentation on "Cost-Sharing Arrangements in International Science and Technology Cooperation: The CRDF Experience.”

Baltic Dynamics Conference
International Partnership for Innovation
The Baltic Dynamics Conference is an initiative of the Baltic Association of Science/Technology Parks and Innovation Centres - BASTIC - and has been held annually since its inception in 1996. CRDF plans to support the travel of several U.S. researchers to Baltic Dynamics. In cooperation with the Latvian Ministry of Education and Science and the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia, CRDF will also be co-hosting a seminar focusing on U.S.- Latvian collaboration in the field of materials science.

English Language Intensive Training (ELIT)

7th Annual Pan-Rec Conference
The Basic Research and Higher Education (BRHE) program will hold its seventh annual program conference in Perm, Russia, on June 14-15 at Perm State University. Representatives from all 20 Research and Education Centers (RECs) will share research experiences and best practices for integrating research with university education. This will be the first Pan-REC conference for the program's four newest RECs, located in Irkutsk, Tambov, Yaroslavl, and Moscow. Featured sessions will address the role of BRHE in the development of innovative universities in Russia, and special invited lectures will recount the history of US-Russian scientific cooperation in the context of this year's 200-year anniversary of the establishment of US-Russian diplomatic relations.
