Centralized Servcies

The NITC Centers of Excellence operations are seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, all year long. Our services are 100 percent reimbursable by our customers through competitive billing rates.

In 1972, the NITC began offering centralized computing services for other USDA agencies. Thanks to the economies of scale offered by centralized computing direction, NITC has evolved into a leading edge operation serving 70,000+ end users nationwide.

Our IBM z/OS mainframes run the z/OS operating system, which utilizes a 64-bit architecture. This 24x7x365+ environment, with a total capacity of 1,983 MIPS, has a long history of providing a reliable, secure foundation for interactive and batch processing. We install and support over 500 commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products, including various Linux products, and manage approximately 17+ terabytes of Direct Access Storage Device (DASD). The NITC has an additional 4+ terabytes dedicated to the enterprise scalable storage area network (SAN). To relieve our customers of routine maintenance functions, we provide other value-added services such as continuous storage management, security administration, regular dataset backups, contingency planning/disaster recovery, and technical support.

NITC hosts a growing minicomputer-based mid-range environment. RISC based platforms supported include IBM, HP, Sun systems, and Pentium-based servers with the associated operating systems. NITC is working in partnership with customers to provide services leveraging the strength of mainframe technology in the mid-range environment by providing software tools and telecommunications protocols for centralized data warehousing and databases.

NITC offers multi-platform application, database development and maintenance. In addition to database administration and help desk, other capabilities include testing, system integration across multiple operating systems, and technical documentation. NITC continues to evolve an IT infrastructure design to compliment the market diversity and scope of the mid-range open system environments.
