ODE Vendor Day Program

The ODE Vendor Day Program is an ODE-sponsored educational activity that allows device manufacturers to display and provide to FDA reviewers a product demo highlighting the scientific basis for their product. The Vendor Day is held at ODE headquarters where scientific reviewers visit industry displays that include devices and other appropriate items such as videotapes and simulators. Reviewers also have the opportunity to query the manufacturers' scientists and engineers about the product design and its operation and application, providing them with useful information about the device.

Aside from the educational benefits afforded FDA reviewers, the Vendor Day Program also engenders improved communications between industry and FDA and provides both groups with a better understanding of the health issues involved with medical device technology.

Background

The ODE Program Management Office developed the Vendor Day Program in 1993. HIMA (Health Industry Manufacturers Association), NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) and FDLI (Food, Drug and Law Institute) were asked for their ideas and support which they gave enthusiastically. Several medical device associations (such as HIMA, NEMA, OSMA, AMDM, etc.) have participated with ODE in hosting several Vendor Days per year covering such topics as: Orthopedic Implants, Endoscopes, Ultrasound, Sterilization and Packaging, DNA Amplification, Diagnostic and Safety Devices, Orthopedic and Spinal Devices, Patient Monitoring Devices, New Technology, and others.
