Place Names Document 19th-Century Portuguese Settlement near Jacksonville

As this 1936 U.S. Geological Survey topographic quadrangle indicates, the area to the northeast of Jacksonville continued to be known as "Portuguese Hill." Although this immigrant community has been assimilated into the cultural life of the central Illinois prairies, the notation of "Trinidad School" on the map is another reminder of its long, mid-nineteenth-century journey to find a new home.
