WASHINGTON, November 14, 2001--The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has awarded three emergency grants totaling $87,000 for projects related to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York, the Endowment announced today. The three projects are:

• a survey and report on the extent of damage and loss to cultural resources in lower Manhattan (Heritage Preservation, Washington, D.C., $27,000, contact Jane Long, 202/634-1422);

• a traveling exhibition and public programs on the response of citizens and use of public spaces for the many shared expressions of grief and mourning in response to the terrorist attacks (City Lore, Inc., New York City, $30,000, contact Steve Zeitlin, 212/529-1955); and

• an exhibition, with accompanying website and public programs, on the role of port workers on Sept. 11 in evacuating crowds and transporting and sheltering rescue workers (South Street Seaport Museum, New York City, $30,000, Steven Jaffe, 646/831-0490).
