The TMCTB supports and directs a program of basic, applied, and clinical research in the areas of transfusion medicine, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, stem cell biology and cellular therapies.

August 1995 to September 2006, Westat (Rockville, MD):

Co-principal investigator of the coordinating center for the Retrovirus Epidemiology Donor Studies I and II (REDS-I and -II), a large NHLBI multicenter program whose primary mission is to initiate and facilitate epidemiologic and laboratory investigations of HIV and other transfusion-transmissible agents in blood donors and to study any major issue pertaining to blood products’ safety and availability.

Co-principal investigator of the coordinating center for the REDS-II International program, whose ob jectives are to conduct epidemiologic, laboratory, and survey research on blood donors in selected resource-limited countries (China and Brazil) seriously impacted by the AIDS epidemic to help increase blood supply safety and availability.
