2009 Veterinary Scholars Research Program:

The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine (AUCVM) invites veterinary students interested in participating in a mentored research program during the summer of 2009 to apply to our Veterinary Scholars Research Program.  The Program is co-sponsored by the Merck Merial Veterinary Scholars Program and the AUCVM.

Goals of the Program:

Provide a high-quality research experience for 1st and 2nd year veterinary students.

Provide exposure in relevant areas of research to veterinary students so that they may practice a more learned and higher quality of medicine and be better equipped to integrate future research developments into a progressive practice of veterinary medicine.

  • Promote proficient reading of research literature.
  • Allow development of appreciation for the scientific method.
  • Introduce the possibility of a career in biomedical research.

The 2009 Auburn University Veterinary Scholars Research Program will begin on May 19th and conclude on July 24th.  The stipend will likely be $4,500.00.  All participants are expected to attend the Veterinary Scholars National Symposium to be held at North Carolina State University August 6th – August 8th

The deadline for applications is February 2, 2009.

Applicant Information:

Application:  Student applicants must identify, in order of preference, three faculty mentors they wish to work with (see accompanying list of faculty mentors and their research projects) and prepare a paragraph stating why they are interested in participating in the Program, as well as career goals and pertinent background information. Students are encouraged to contact the faculty members in which they show an interest in working with prior to submitting the application.  After you have determined your choices, complete the Application Form and send electronically or print the Application form and return it to the Office for Research and Graduate Studies, College of Veterinary Medicine, 106 Greene Hall, Auburn University, Alabama  36849-5517.  Applications are due on or before February 2, 2009. 

Review Process:  The Summer Research Fellowship Committee will review applications and match students with faculty mentors as closely as possible to the matches requested.  Preference will be given to students who have a genuine interest in obtaining a research experience but who have not had the opportunity to participate in the past. 

Successful applicants will be notified by April 6, 2009. 

Eligibility:

Applicants must be veterinary students who have completed their first or second year of a veterinary-professional program within the United States.  Veterinary students who possess an MS or PhD degree or who are currently enrolled in a graduate program are not eligible. 

2009 Timeline:

  • February 2 - Deadline for applications
  • April 6 - Notification for successful applicants
  • May 18 - First day of Research Program
  • May 19 - Orientation
  • July 20 – 24 - Student PowerPoint presentations     
  • July 24 - Last day of Research Program
  • August 6 - 8 - Symposium – North Carolina State University
