Recently Added FeaturesSteven Chu was recently selected to be the Secretary of Energy by Barack Obama. Chu, Director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and Professor in the Physics Department at the University of California, Berkeley, did his thesis and postdoctoral work at Berkeley in 1978 in the area of the observation of parity non-conservation in atomic transitions. Chu was co-winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics "for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light". [added 12/2008] Yoichiro Nambu was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the discovery of the mechanism of spontaneous broken symmetry in subatomic physics" Nambu 'has revolutionized modern scientific ideas about the nature of the most fundamental particles and the space through which they move. His theories form an essential cornerstone of what physicists call the Standard Model, which explains in a unified way three of the four fundamental forces of nature: strong, weak and electromagnetic.'
