Join us at this lively and interesting gathering, where over 9,000 scholars from around the world present their research, visit the book exhibit, and mingle with colleagues. Check this site for information updates.

The 2008 MLA Convention Program is now available online to MLA members and nonmembers. The Program is searchable by participant, subject, meeting type, and keyword.

The MLA Job Information List is now available for searching. Free access to search the online JIL continues to be a benefit of departmental membership in ADE and ADFL. Those not in member departments can access the JIL by purchasing an ADE or ADFL affiliate membership.

This year's JIL introduces a new feature to help departments communicate quickly and easily with the general population of job seekers. Departments can submit reports on the status of their searches (e.g., "No longer accepting applications," "MLA convention interviews have been scheduled," "Position has been filled") that will be appended to the online job descriptions. Job seekers can request e-mail notification when status reports are submitted for job listings they have selected and saved. Job seekers can also append notes to their saved listings.

2008 MLA Elections

The 2008 MLA elections for second vice president, the Executive Council, the Delegate Assembly, and the division executive committees are under way. Ballots have been mailed to all 2008 MLA members; they are due back at the MLA office on or before 10 December. Members can log in to review the candidate information.

The Committee on Community Colleges and the Executive Council are sponsoring a professional development workshop for community college faculty members at the MLA Annual Convention in San Francisco on the afternoon of 27 December 2008. Participants do not have to be MLA members or register for the MLA convention to attend the free workshop. The workshop is limited to fifty participants. Click here to learn more.

MLA Bibliography Adds Abstracts

Effective with its April 2008 online update, the MLA International Bibliography includes publisher-provided abstracts in its bibliographic citations. The first group of over 9,000 abstracts, reprinted with permission of the publishers, comes from PMLA, Project Muse, JSTOR, and German Quarterly. More abstracts will become available for search and display with each update. This enhancement is meant to provide users with quality information in their online research. Previous enhancements have included scholarly Web site indexing; full-text links to Project Muse, JSTOR, and ProQuest's Dissertations and Theses; and digitization of retrospective 1926–62 print volumes.

The MLA International Bibliography is available to subscribing libraries through CSA, Cengage-Gale, Ebsco, OCLC, and ProQuest (Chadwyck-Healey) platforms. For more information, please contact bibliography@mla.org.

There is growing interest in languages such as Arabic (up 126.5%), Chinese (up 51.0%), and Korean (up 37.1%). Enrollments in American Sign Language increased nearly 30% from 2002.
