Dog Treats May Present Health Hazard
In April 2007, the FDA warned consumers that American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy Chews and Dog Chews manufactured and distributed by T.W. Enterprises, Ferndale, Wash., may present a health hazard for pets and people.
Risk of Salmonella: The dog treats have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, which can cause serious infections in dogs and cats and, if there is cross-contamination, in people too. Salmonella can potentially be transferred to people handling these pet treats, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Children, elderly people, and those with compromised immune systems are especially at risk.
Advice for Consumers:
- Do not feed these dog treats to your pets.
- Dispose of the treats safely, for example, in a securely covered trash receptacle.
- Contact your health care provider if you show signs of Salmonella infection. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, inflammation of the heart valves (endocarditis), arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
- Monitor your pet for lack of energy (lethargy), diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets infected with Salmonella will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Healthy animals can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
- If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian.
