Food and Drug Administration
Environment, Safety and Health Policy Statement
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is committed to protecting and safeguarding
the environment and the well-being of its employees in support of our public
health mission. We will achieve success in protecting the environment and improving
occupational safety and health in FDA workplaces through the design and implementation
of a Quality System focused on continually improving environment, safety and
health management. The fundamental principles of the FDA Environment, Safety
and Health Management System (ESHMS) are to proactively prevent pollution,
conserve resources, and provide a quality work environment focused on preventing
workplace injuries and illnesses. More specifically, the FDA commits to:
- Achieve
compliance with, and when possible exceed, Federal, state and local environment,
safety and health (ESH) laws and regulations and other applicable requirements.
- Establish meaningful and measurable ESH targets and objectives;
review and evaluate our performance; and implement corrective actions whenever
necessary.
- Clearly and openly consider ESH impacts, risks and other factors
in relevant operations and decisions.
- Create a workplace culture where ESH is valued by having its
leaders, supervisors and managers communicate clear ESH expectations; facilitate
active employee involvement through delegation, empowerment and resource allocation;
model appropriate behavior; and manage performance and information.
- Expect active employee participation throughout the Agency
and promote an ongoing dialogue with stakeholders to encourage innovation
and solicit ideas for continual improvement of the ESHMS.
- Implement an effective pollution prevention program and manage
generated waste streams in an environmentally responsible manner.
- Reduce consumption of natural resources.
- Be an environmentally responsible neighbor in the communities
where we are located and act promptly to correct incidents or conditions that
endanger health, safety, or the environment, and report them to the proper
authorities.
