Corporate Sponsor Invests in Community Safety through Adopting

Strawberry Peak Lookout!

San Bernardino National Forest, CA (February, 2008)—A local office of BAE Systems, a global defense and aerospace company, has sponsored Strawberry Peak Fire Lookout through the Adopt-A-Lookout program sponsored by the San Bernardino National Forest Association (SBNFA).  The sponsorship supports the Fire Lookout Host program managed by the SBNFA, helping to keep seven historic towers across the San Bernardino National Forest staffed and in good repair to continue to spot fires and educate visitors to the Forest.

Forest Care

These pictures show Bill Kingston’s property after the Grass Valley Fire in October, 2007. Although difficult to see, this property burned in the fire, responsible for the loss of over 100 homes, including Kingston’s neighbors. The middle photo illustrates the thinned property and the far right photo is looking from the street toward the house, previously hidden by trees. Kingston credits the Forest Care thinning program for saving his house in the fire. Kingston’s property is roughly a half acre in size, through the program he was reimbursed $1875 from the total costs of thinning at $2600. A remarkable 225 trees less than 12” in diameter were removed from his lot.

SBNFA's Urban Youth Corps was selected for REI's Giving Tree program this year.  REI will solicit for volunteers and donations from their customers.  SBNFA also received camping equiment for youth adventures in the forest.
