STD Intervention for Supervisors (STDIS)

(Companion course to Principles)

Schedule:

Temple, TX (Apr 7-10, 2009)
Carson City, NV (May 4-7, 2009)
Indianapolis, IN (Jun 23-26, 2009)

Background: This four-day course is designed to develop supervisory technical skills in modeling, guiding, instructing, reviewing, and evaluating STD intervention activities. STDIS teaches how the First Line Supervisor (FLS) can best review and evaluate STD intervention activities, identify methods and steps to improve the DIS case management efforts, provide overall technical direction, and develop STD intervention skills. Since the emphasis of this course is on “how to” review, evaluate, and facilitate STD intervention efforts, the participants must be technically competent in DIS activities and the disease intervention process.

Objective: By the end of the course, participants will:
  •   Improve analysis of cases and lots,
  •   “Model”interviewing and investigating skills,
  •   Improve problem resolution and persistence,
  •   Understand the disease intervention capabilities of the Lot System and be better able to teach its use,
  •   Learn from each other.
Methods: The course consists of lectures, discussions, interactive role plays, and group exercises developed to enhance supervisory technical skills in case management, field investigation, interviewing, problem solving and persistence.

Eligibility: This course is targeted to those supervisors and lead DIS responsible for formal technical evaluation of STD intervention activities. Priority candidates are new (within the last year) or soon-to-be Federal, state or local FLS.

Pre-requisites: Participants are strongly encouraged to have completed the Employee Development Guide (EDG) and the Introduction to STD Intervention (ISTDI) course (taught by Prevention Training Centers). STDIS should be completed within the first year of employee assuming an FLS position.

How to Apply: Complete the Program and Training Branch (PTB) Training Application and submit to stdtraining@cdc.gov or FAX to (404) 639-5210. For information or guidance, call Sheila McKenzie (404) 639-8360. All courses are free of charge to eligible participants who have been approved to attend by their managers; however, PTB cannot pay for any travel or per diem expenses associated with these courses.

Minimum/Maximum Number of Participants: The course is designed for 12 to 15 participants and enrollment will be limited to 15, unless approved in advance by PTB. Enrollment of fewer than eight may require cancellation of course. Local “sponsoring” agency may enroll no more than eight participants. The remaining slots will be opened to surrounding areas.
