TVA's Clean Air Program

TVA has one of the most aggressive emission control programs in the country. Since 1977, TVA has reduced sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions by 82 percent and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions during the summer ozone seaon (May through September) by 81 percent.

TVA is continuing to add emissions control equipment to help improve regional air quality. A scrubber will be operational at Bull Run Fossil Plant in late 2008, two will be operational at Kingston Fossil Plant by 2010 (reducing all emissions from the plant's 10 units), and two additional scrubbers will be added at John Sevier Fossil Plant by 2012.

This video gives an overview of the clean-air equipment TVA has installed at its coal-burning plants. It illustrates how scrubbers help control SO2 and SCRs (selective catalytic reduction systems) help reduce NOx to improve regional air quality.
