Preparing For The Future

BEGINNING IN 1859 WITH ONLY FOURTEEN BOOKS,
today Penn State University Libraries comprises more than 5 million volumes,
plus digital publications, journals, and databases.

Celebrate the University Libraries at Penn State!
1859-2009

There is a dream that emerges from collected books, periodicals, and digital data: that dream is education.
There is an energy that builds from teaching and learning: that energy is motivation.
There is a reality that materializes from our efforts: that reality is our future.

Those first fourteen books were the beginning of a grand tradition of learning and a powerful symbol of knowledge at Penn State University Libraries. As this great resource has grown, so has the Libraries' ability to impact and change the lives of thousands of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. It’s amazing to think that just a few agricultural texts in 1859 could become the keystone of North America’s 8th ranked academic research library. Thanks to many dedicated leaders and generous donors, the Penn State University Libraries stand proud in its history and expectant for its future.

Every person who values our traditions and strives for an improved tomorrow helps to build the future of our Libraries. Together we will continue to preserve, share, and offer these treasures to all who seek to discover its secrets. Explore the links below to see why, where, and how your donation can make a difference.
