I support cutting-edge science and research programs. The United States leads the world in many areas due to the investments made by the public and private sectors in biotechnology, health, space, aeronautics, general science, and other fields. To maintain our competitive edge it is critical to invest in math and science education, as well as scientific and technical research. In addition, I have consistently supported the NASA Idaho Space Grant Consortium in their impressive work. The Space Grant program was established by Congress in 1988 to increase science, math and engineering education in our nation. The Idaho Space Grant Consortium (ISGC) serves the people of Idaho with a flexible, broad based grant program that encourages NASA-related research, special projects and K-12 initiatives across the state. Nearly $140,000 is awarded each year to faculty, college students, and school teachers in Idaho. The NASA Idaho Space Grant Consortium was recently awarded a competitive grant by NASA's Office of Education to expand its programs. The grant recognizes the ISGC as one of the best of the fifty-two Consortia in the nation.

Senator Crapo visits biofuels lab at the University of IdahoFinally, you may be interested to know that, in May 2004, I hosted in Boise the Senator Mike Crapo Math and Science Education Symposium. This symposium brought together educators, administrators and community and national leaders to discuss the future of science and math education in Idaho. It is my hope that this symposium has helped educators, the state and local communities identify under-used or unused resources that can be integrated into math and science education in the public schools. Funding for research and development and math, science, and technical education is important for our future. I will continue to support efforts in this important area.
