Action on Veterans

I am pleased to co-sponsor legislation and take actions that will support Idaho veterans. This is not a comprehensive list of all the legislation I have co-sponsored related to issues of concern to veterans. You can view a comprehensive list at the Legislation Co-Sponsored Section of this site or through the Library of Congress Thomas site.

Legislation I have co-sponsored in the 110th Congress:

  • S. 2119, American Veterans Disabled for Life Coin Act--A bill to require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of veterans who became disabled for life while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.

  • S.Con.Res.12 - A concurrent resolution supporting the goals and ideals of a National Medal of Honor and to celebrate and honor the recipients of the Medal of Honor on the anniversary of the first award of that medal in 1863. 

  • S. 1593, the Defenders of Freedom Tax Relief Act of 2007, which would provide $553 million in tax help over ten years for soldiers, reservists, veterans and their families.
  • S. 1233, the Veterans Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation Act, which would provide and enhance intervention, rehabilitative treatment and services to veterans with traumatic brain injury.
  • S. 644, the Total Force Educational Assistance Enhancement and Integration Act of 2007, consolidate the Active Duty and Selected Reserve Montgomery GI Bill programs under one authority and addresses the increasing gap between various benefit programs for veterans.
  • S. Res. 117 and S.Res. 122 , commemorating the 25th anniversary of the construction and dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
  • S.Res. 82, which designates August 16th as National Airborne Day, which honors glider troopers, paratroopers, air assault troopers, Rangers, U.S. Army Special Forces, USMC Recon, U.S. Navy Seals, U.S. Air Force Special Operations and Troop Carrier Command.
  • S.Con.Res. 27, which designates August 7th as Purple Heart Day and supports the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
  • S.Con.Res. 26, which would recognize the Military Order of the Purple Heart on its 75th anniversary and commends all recipients of the Purple Heart for their courageous demonstrations of gallantry and heroism on behalf of the United States. It also encourages the American people to take the time to learn about the Purple Heart and the great acts of honor, bravery and courage that it represents.
  • S.Res. 625, a resolution designating August 16, 2008, as National Airborne Day, which honors glider troopers, paratroopers, air assault troopers, Rangers, U.S. Army Special Forces, USMC Recon, U.S. Navy Seals, U.S. Air Force Special Operations and Troop Carrier Command.

  • S. 2874,  The Hubbard Act, allows a service member, whether enlisted or officer, who voluntarily separates under sole survivorship to qualify for the following, even if they have not fulfilled their military commitment at the time of separation:  participation in the Montgomery GI Bill program as long as a service member initially participated in the program; separation pay for the time of fulfilled commitment; transitional healthcare coverage for 120 days; use of the Commissary, Base Exchange, and Morale, Welfare and Recreation for two (2) years; entitlement to the Veterans Home Loan Guarantee program; Veterans' Preference in Government Employment -- if applicable when applying for a government position; Unemployment Compensation; Veterans Employment and Training through the Department of Labor.
