-
Breakthrough: DOE Data Explorer
• Launched June 6, 2008
• Currently identifies 242 collections of DOE non-text data
• Types of non-text data identified by DDE are:
- Numeric data
- Figures (graphic) and data plots
- Interactive data maps
- Computer models and simulations
- Scientific images (static)
- Scientific multimedia (audio, video, animations)
- Specialized mix (primarily for genomic collections) -
• 'Data owners' an important component of process
• Well received: - "As a research librarian, my experience is that "data" can be the most highly useful information for scientists and other technical staff, and can also be the most difficult information to find. Kudos to the DOE for providing yet another way to search and find potentially important information from government-funded research"
- "I just tried out the DOE Data Explorer and found out that it produces quite useful results. Good job!"
- "This is an exciting development." -
Information Bridge and Energy Citation Database
• Useful Enhancements:
- Spell Check when using Basic Search
- Zotero plug-in integration when using FireFox
- DOI display in citations, if available
- Exact count of matches with search results
- Faster search and retrieval
• New Lucene indexing mechanism replaced Oracle Text Index -
Document Discussion: Information Bridge
Goal: To provide substantive commentary for a general readership
• Users may perform a search and then begin a discussion or add to a discussion
• Authors of the documents will be notified so that they may view the discussion
• Email addresses are not shared
• Discussions are
- posted during business hours
- moderated for personal or offensive content
- not edited; but approved or rejected -
Science Research Connection (SRC)
• Over 1,500 requests for digitized full-text in FY08
• Currently has 628 registered users
• Future enhancements include faster search and retrieval
-
Federal R&D Project Summaries
• Provides a portal to more than 750,000 Federal research projects, complete with full-text single-query searching across databases residing at different agencies.
• Currently searches DOE, EPA, NIH, NSF, SBA, USDA
• DTIC and NASA to be added early CY09 -
Energy Technology Data Exchange
On the International Front
• South Africa has sent letter of intent to join Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDE); however, UK plans to leave in Sept 09
• Usage of ETDEWEB database is going up:
- Records are now indexed for Google; users will be authenticated for seamless access
- ETDEWEB is now in WorldWideScience resource
• Sweden’s historic collection is digitized and now in ETDEWEB
• A topic of discussion at the upcoming INIS meeting is user needs in the nuclear area
- What areas related to nuclear seem to be of most interest? -
Federated Search Gateways
Agency level - Science Accelerator
Search key DOE databases
Interagency level - Science.gov
Search 200 million pages of science from 13 federal science agencies
International level - WorldWideScience.org
Search 375 million pages of science from databases of every inhabited continent
-
Science Accelerator
Recent enhancements include:
• Addition of DOepatents and Energy Science and Technology Software Center (ESTSC) to the federated search
• Capability to Refine Results (ability to search within a search)
• Addition of a product-specific Comment form
Upcoming: Clustering and addition of DOE Data Explorer to the federated search -
Science.gov 5.0 Launched 9/15/08
• Searchable content has quadrupled (!)
• Clustering tool helps with targeting searches
• Links to related EurekAlert! Science News and Wikipedia add information
• Capability to download results into personal files or citation software now available
-
WorldWideScience.org
• Includes databases/sources from some countries/regions not traditionally well-covered
• Has shown tremendous growth from 10 databases and portals from 12 countries to NOW over 40 databases and portals from more than 50 countries.
• Includes clustering feature, which groups search results into similar topics, as well as specific date ranges
• Machine translation tools to facilitate the addition of non-English sources are under review
• Press release is planned this week, China to become latest member -

Digitization of DOE Report Collections big numbers and new approach
• Requests continue via SRC
• Approximately 15,000 digitized reports added recently, result of INIS collaboration
• ALSO – Digital Document Access efforts continue
• 6,000 Fermi digitized documents added this past year
• 8,500 pre-9/11, unlimited LANL reports now available
• Sites and OSTI continue to work together
• Plans to establish report option for sites' newly digitized reports
NOW – 'Adopt-a-Doc' concept
-
Adopt-a-Doc: New, On-Demand Service
• Individuals/organizations may sponsor digitization of available reports for a nominal fee
• Indicator of document availability to be included in bibliographic record
• DOE and DOE contractors may continue to request via SRC at no-cost
• Sponsors may choose to request an acknowledgement be included with scanned document
• Respective authors will be notified regarding electronic availability and sponsorship
• Announcement October 08 -
Special Collections and Customized Resources important windows
• Geothermal Technologies Legacy Collection www.osti.gov/geothermal
• Enables search of 19K+ items from 1970s-forward
• Maybe more specialized collections in future

OSTI Staff and Outreach important roles and promotion of DOE research
• Valerie Allen Director, Government Information Division, SLA
• Tim Byrne Chair, Depository Library Council
• Other News
- Exhibit at ALA in 2008
- Potential exhibit at SLA in 2009
- Annual Support to DOE at AAAS
- New focus on University/Library Outreach
- Library of Congress newest member of CENDI
- More…. -
Legislative Update the debate continues
• Currently, the NIH Public Access Policy ensures public has access to published results of NIH-funded research
• Requires scientists to submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts to PubMed Central
• Potential for this Policy to extend to other Federal Agencies (open access potential and $$ savings)
• If required, DOE has infrastructure in place to implement through the Scientific and Technical Information Program (STIP)
• This Policy is under attack; proposed legislation is the Fair Copyright in Research Works Act
- Would overturn the NIH policy and make it illegal for other U.S Federal agencies to enact similar policies -
New Frontiers YouTube and facebook
YouTube
• DOE has a growing presence on YouTube
• Seven known labs have PR and STI materials available
• OSTI videos will be available in upcoming months
• Federal agencies are working together
facebook
• Government agencies have a growing presence
• Two examples:
