1/15/09 - TARP Reform Act will cap executive compensation

House to vote today on bill reforming financial rescue program; includes provision advocated by Welch

WASHINGTON, DC - A week after Rep. Peter Welch called on Congress to close a Bush administration loophole and strictly limit pay for executives of banks receiving government bailout funds, the House is expected to vote today on a sweeping reform act that does just that.

In a letter to House Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank signed by 18 other members of Congress, Welch wrote last Wednesday, "It is unacceptable for banking executives to be allowed to pad their pockets with massive bonuses and benefits after mismanaging their companies and coming to the American taxpayer for aid."

 
1/15/09 - Welch reacts to release of economic stimulus details

WASHINGTON, DC - Rep. Peter Welch released the following statement regarding the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan - details of which were released by House leadership Thursday:

"This plan will stimulate the economy, create new jobs and invest in our future. My top priorities have been to take the pressure off Vermont taxpayers and create new Vermont jobs by building a green economy. This plan invests in renewable energy and provides immediate tax relief for the Vermont taxpayer by waiving the state transportation match, reimbursing Vermont for Medicaid expenses and funding special education."

 
1/14/09 - Welch supports, House passes SCHIP bill
WASHINGTON, DC - Rep. Peter Welch supported and the House passed a bill Wednesday that would provide health care coverage to 11 million children. The vote was 289 to 139.

The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Reauthorization bill will expand coverage to 4 million uninsured children and will allow states to continue covering 7 million children who already have health insurance.

 
1/9/09 - Congressional Delegation Nominates 19 Vermont Students to Service Academies
WASHINGTON, January 9 - Senators Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders and Rep. Peter Welch today announced the names of 19 students they nominated to the U.S. service academies.

Applicants to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy must be nominated by a member of Congress. Those accepted by the service academies will be notified early this year.
