Michael Dean Crapo, served 1999 to present

Idaho Senator Michael Crapo Michael Crapo was born in Idaho Falls, Bonneville County, Idaho on May 20, 1951. He graduated from Idaho Falls High School in1969, and then went onto Brigham Young University where he received his B.A. in1973. Crapo then attended Harvard University School of Law and received his J.D. in1977. He was admitted to the bar that same year.

Crapo then served as a law clerk for Judge James M. Carter of the United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit, during 1977 and 1978. Crapo then practiced law in Los Angeles for a year, and moved back to Idaho Falls in 1979 to practice law there.

He was vice chair on the Bonneville County Republican Committee from 1979 through 1981. After this he was vice chair of Legislative District 29 Republican Committee from 1982 until 1984.

Crapo was elected to the Idaho State Senate in 1985 and served until 1992 when he was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives (One Hundred Third Congress). He was re-elected to the two succeeding Congresses serving from January 3,1993 until January 3, 1999.

Crapo did not run for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998; instead, he was elected to the United States Senate for a term beginning January 3, 1999. He was re-elected in 2004 with no official opponent on the ballot.
