Washington Basic Food Program

What it is:

The Basic Food Program helps low-income individuals and families obtain a more nutritious diet by supplementing their income with Basic Food benefits.

Who is eligible:

Individuals who reside in Washington State. You must meet:

  • Income and resource requirements
  • Citizenship or alien status requirements

Legal immigrants who are no longer eligible for federally funded food assistance due to new alien requirements passed under the Personal Welfare and Work Opportunity Act may be eligible for our Basic Food Program for Legal Aliens.

Income and resource requirements:

Your Basic Food benefits are based on your family size and your family income. A family of three could have gross earnings of up to $1,861 per month before they would no longer be eligible for these benefits.

Who is not eligible:

  • Fugitive felons
  • Ineligible aliens

If you receive Basic Food assistance you must:

  • Participate in the Food Stamp Employment and Training Program, if required in your area
  • Complete requested eligibility review
  • Cooperate with Quality Assurance, if you are contacted by them

You can apply for Basic Food Assistance at your local Community Services Office or apply online using our Online Application for Services.
