    Breakthrough: DOE Data Explorer

    • Launched June 6, 2008
    • Currently identifies 242 collections of DOE non-text data
    • Types of non-text data identified by DDE are:
      - Numeric data
      - Figures (graphic) and data plots
      - Interactive data maps
      - Computer models and simulations
      - Scientific images (static)
      - Scientific multimedia (audio, video, animations)
      - Specialized mix (primarily for genomic collections)

  • DOE National Laboratory Libraries Coalition (NLLC) October 15-17, 2008

    • 'Data owners' an important component of process
    • Well received:   - "As a research librarian, my experience is that "data" can be the most highly useful information for scientists and other technical staff, and can also be the most difficult information to find. Kudos to the DOE for providing yet another way to search and find potentially important information from government-funded research"
      - "I just tried out the DOE Data Explorer and found out that it produces quite useful results. Good job!"
      - "This is an exciting development."

  • DOE National Laboratory Libraries Coalition (NLLC) October 15-17, 2008

    Legislative Update the debate continues

    • Currently, the NIH Public Access Policy ensures public has access to published results of NIH-funded research
    • Requires scientists to submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts to PubMed Central
    • Potential for this Policy to extend to other Federal Agencies (open access potential and $$ savings)
    • If required, DOE has infrastructure in place to implement through the Scientific and Technical Information Program (STIP)
    • This Policy is under attack; proposed legislation is the Fair Copyright in Research Works Act
      - Would overturn the NIH policy and make it illegal for other U.S Federal agencies to enact similar policies

  • DOE National Laboratory Libraries Coalition (NLLC) October 15-17, 2008

    One known topic of interest…

    Open URLs
    Technical staff has weighed in
OSTI is willing to move forward, contingent on costs and analysis
    Initial targets ECD and SRC
    Input needed:
      - What Open URL resolvers are sites using
      - OSTI to establish working group, 2-3 site participants requested to begin the discussion

  • DOE National Laboratory Libraries Coalition (NLLC) October 15-17, 2008
