School year and summer internships

The Seattle P-I has unpaid internships for college students who want to work as online reporters, photographers or producers. A minimum of 15 hours a week is required during school year, 20 hours during summer. Students must be enrolled in college and receive course credit for the internship. Interns are expected to know journalism and website basics and be able to commit to a schedule. An automobile may be required (we do reimburse mileage to assignments) and all photographers will be required to provide their own camera equipment.

The deadline for the fall quarter or semester 2008 is Sept. 12, 2008. Deadline for subsequent quarters or semesters is four weeks prior to the start of the quarter or semester.

Only e-mailed applications will be accepted. Work samples should be links to published work or electronic copies.

Requirements:

  • Cover letter and resume showing qualifications for internship
  • Unofficial transcript that shows journalism classes completed
  • Five examples of published news stories (if reporter)
  • Sufficient jpg images to show photo experience (if photographer)
  • Names and contacts for two references; at least one should be from a supervisor familiar with published work. Letter not required, just contact information.
  • Names and contact information for college advisor or individual responsible for certifying participating in a for-credit internship program.

Openings for Fall 2008:

  • SPI executive producer (One will be selected).Duties include setting the direction of SPI’s coverage of the Seattle scene, determining staff schedules and assignments as well as coordinating coverage with the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and seattlepi.com staff. 15-25 hours/week.
  • SPI producer/bloggers (Three will be selected). Duties include updating the SPI website, covering local bands, clubs and the restaurant scene and writing daily for the SPI blog. 15-20 hours/week.
  • Online photographer (Four will be selected). Duties include photography at musical, performing arts and sporting events, including in low-light or poor lighting conditions as well as street and campus fashion. 15-20 hours/week.
  • Website producer (One will be selected from qualified applicants) Duties include updating seattlepi.com, building photo galleries, producing video for online. FULL TIME ONLY for one quarter/semester.

Summer newsroom internships for 2009

The Seattle P-I offers a 10-week summer internship program for college students who are majoring in print or photo journalism. Students must be enrolled in college to qualify and must be registered for summer school to receive college credit for the internship. At this time, we are not offering paid summer internships. Interns are expected to know journalism basics so they can work on deadline. An automobile is required and we do reimburse mileage to assignments.

The deadline for the summer of 2008 is Dec. 15, 2008. Selections will be made by mid-February.

Only "hard copy" applications will be accepted; please no e-mail applications. Work samples will not be returned.
