University Honda goes out of business

By ANDREA JAMES
P-I REPORTER

University Honda Yamaha appears to have gone out of business.

The voicemail prompt on the company's main phone line on Friday said, "We are no longer in business. Appreciate all the business over the years and wish you luck in your futures."

A message left was not immediately returned.

The East Pike Street business sold motorcycles, scooters and all-terrain vehicles.

Gilbert Eaton started the business in 1959 and ran it until 1967, when James Tenneson and Terry Saxlund bought it, according to the company's Web site. In 1981, Saxlund sold his ownership in the company to Pete Wicken, and three years later, Tenneson sold his shares to Wicken.

Wicken moved the business to its present location in 1995. Tom Wicken bought it in 2004.

The company's "About Us" page on its Web site says, "The future of University Honda/Yamaha/MZ looks very bright and we welcome you to come in and find out that our employees are just as wonderful as our customers."

It's unclear when the business closed. The company's homepage, at hondabikes.com, says in large red letters, "We regretfully announce that after 50 years of business, University Honda/Yamaha has closed (its) doors. I want to thank everyone for (their) support over the years, and wish everyone well in the future."
