Energy Smarts Team Training Manual
3rd - 8th grade

This manual is a teacher's guide to energy conservation activities for elementary and middle school students, developed in Eugene, Oregon, in 1993 with a grant from Bonneville Power Administration. It can be used to teach students to monitor their school building for energy consumption so that they can start thinking about using resources wisely. The manual includes a pretest and post-test; simulation games to build problem solving and teamwork skills; and training in basic electricity and practical skills like meter reading.

"Community Conservation Challenge"
Energy Conservation Classroom-in-a-Box
4th - 5th grade

Energy Conservation a Hit with Classroom-in-a-Box:

More than 1,000 fourth and fifth grade classrooms received an Energy conservation Classroom-in-a-Box. Fifty-nine utilities across Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Washington participated in the BPA conservation program by distributing the boxes to elementary schools in their service territory.

Educators and utilities have praised the Energy Conservation Classroom-in-a-Box. Educators have expressed appreciation for the completeness of the box and the ease of teaching the energy conservation lessons plans.

Kids in the Creek
5th - 7th grade

For the classroom and for field use. These hands-on activities teach students to determine the health of a stream. Lessons cover water testing procedures for temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH as well as aquatic insect population in the following sections.

  • The Student Workbook: Stream Environments contains a simulation of elements and events that give your students a chance to do some detective work! With actual data they will be able to interpret and make decisions about their stream without leaving the classroom! (Teacher's guide is provided.)
  • The Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Survey and Stream Study is intended to be used on a stream field trip to find pollution tolerant and intolerent macroinvertebrates. However, you may also want to use this information as part of your in-class curriculum.
  • The Classroom Exercise contains fun classroom exercise and includes Water Quality Testing, Fishless Aquarium and Macroinvertebrate Mayhem activities.
