Movable pedestrian crossings signs for school crossing guards
City of Colorado Springs’ road signs and markings evolve as new applications are approved by the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. A traffic control device new to Colorado Springs is here that drivers and pedestrians should become familiar with, movable pedestrian crossings signs. These signs can be used by school crossing guards as a way to alert drivers that the crosswalk is under heavy use when the sign is posted. Because the signs are not always in place, drivers do not become desensitized to them as can occur with permanent signs. The signs are used in the center line of collector two-lane roads adjacent to schools. Crossing guards can put the signs out and take them in each morning and afternoon. These signs are now being used at Colorado Springs Charter Academy and the City currently has signs for five additional locations. As always, remember that State law requires: 1) pedestrians give vehicles the opportunity to stop before entering a crosswalk, and 2) vehicles yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. When using a crosswalk, bicyclists are considered pedestrians and have the same rights and responsibilities as a pedestrian, as long as they enter the crosswalk at a pedestrian speed (on or off their bikes).
