Why is NCI supporting CHIS?

NCI is providing support for the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) to field cancer control questions covering cancer risk factors and cancer screening behaviors comparable to the Cancer Control Module in the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS).

Because racial and ethnic subpopulations are so well represented in California, CHIS will enable investigators to better estimate health-related behaviors, use of health services, and cancer risk factors in these small population groups. Data are reported for most counties and the largest cities in the state.

CHIS will be next fielded in 2007. This survey will include questions on knowledge of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the acceptability of the HPV vaccine as well as cancer screening.

The 2001, 2003, and 2005 CHIS data are now available from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research.
