DOLA's Use of GIS

The Department of Local Affairs uses GIS and produces geospatial data for a variety of purposes. The largest applications of GIS in DOLA are within the State Demography Office in the Division of Local Government and the Division of Emergency Management. The State Demography Office supports demographic analysis and population estimates with GIS. The Division of Emergency Management is developing GIS to support emergency management planning and response and homeland security prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. DOLA is also the location of the State GIS Coordinator and associated statewide GIS coordination efforts. GIS is also being used periodically by technical assistance staff when researching special districts or wastewater grant applications.

What are Geographic Information Systems

GIS are systems to manage, analyze and display mapped information.  They provide the ability to answer questions easily about locations of objects and spatial relationships between objects.  GIS can be used for a wide variety of purposes including demographic analysis, public health, emergency management, transportation planning and management, environmental protection and assessment, economic development and more.  GIS are critical in addressing most situations faced by state government, as well as local and federal agencies.

GIS can automate analysis of spatial information.
