Your Options
To begin taking courses in MU In The Evening, you will need to fill out one of four application forms. Each “path” to enrollment depends on your previous college experience and your goals for the future. Please identify the option that describes you and follow the directions for that option below. Don't hesitate to ask us questions!

  1. Option 1: You have little or no previous college credit
  2. Option 2: You have more than 24 hours of credit earned at another college or university
  3. Option 3: You are a former MU student and want to re-enroll
  4. Option 4: You do not want to work toward a degree, just take individual courses
  5. Information for all students regardless of how you enroll

Option 1
You have little or no previous college credit.
You want to work toward a Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree, and have fewer than 24 hours of college/university credit from institutions other than MU (or NO credit at all). You must meet Mizzou's freshman admission requirements.

Apply

  • Visit the MU Undergraduate Admissions site and follow the steps in applying for freshman admissions.
  • You will be able to apply online or download a printable application. If you download the printable version, please follow the instructions for submitting the application.
  • There is a $45 nonrefundable application fee.
Transcripts
  • As soon as possible, have your high school submit an official transcript, with class rank and required ACT or SAT scores to the Office of Admissions, University of Missouri-Columbia, 230 Jesse Hall, Columbia, MO 65211. (If you haven’t taken the ACT or SAT or can’t access the records, contact Chris Marshall, BGS degree adviser, at marshallce@missouri.edu. She will discuss alternative options for enrollment and give you information about taking the ACT or SAT.)
  • When submitting a transcript(s), be sure it is a final transcript showing high school graduation and successful completion of all course work.
  • Also, have all colleges or universities you have attended submit official transcripts to the Office of Admissions, 230 Jesse Hall, Columbia, MO 65211.

Tips:

  • When you request an official transcript as part of the admissions process, also ask for a student copy to be sent to you. This will allow you to go ahead and meet with the BGS degree adviser, Chris Marshall, to start planning your path to meet your educational goals.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about the process or admission requirements (including the ACT or SAT requirement), please e-mail Chris Marshall at MarshallCE@missouri.edu. Chris is here to help you through the process and she can help you identify all of your options.

Option 2
You are a transfer student.
You want to work toward a Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) degree, and have 24 or more hours of college/university credit from institutions other than MU. You must meet MIzzou's transfer student admission requirements.

Apply

  • Visit the MU Undergraduate Admissions site and follow the steps in applying for transfer admissions.
  • You will be able to apply online or download a printable application. If you download the printable version, please follow the instructions for submitting the application.
  • There is a $45 nonrefundable application fee.
Transcripts
  • As soon as possible, have official transcripts from all colleges/universities you have previously attended sent to the Office of Admissions, University of Missouri-Columbia, 230 Jesse Hall, Columbia, MO 65211.
  • Have your high school submit an official transcript and your standardized test scores as well.

Tips:

  • When you request official transcripts as part of the admissions process, also ask for a student copy to be sent to you. Once you have your copy, you can meet with BGS degree adviser Chris Marshall to begin planning your educational career at MU.
  • If you went to MU PLUS other colleges or universities, you can request your Mizzou transcript from the Registrar's Office.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about the process or the transfer admissions requirements please e-mail BGS degree adviser Chris Marshall at MarshallCE@missouri.edu.
  • The Bachelor of General Studies degree is a 120-hour program. Regardless of the number of credits that transfer in with you, you will be required to earn at least 30 hours on the MU campus.
  • If you transfer to MU with 55 hours of credit or more, you will need to meet with Chris Marshall right away to file a “Graduation Plan” with the College of Arts and Science.

Option 4
You want to take individual evening courses without seeking a bachelor of general studies degree.
You may want to become degree-seeking later, but right now you want to enroll as a non-degree-seeking student.

Individual courses are a great option if you are interested in taking courses to:

  • Update your skills
  • Meet a personal interest
  • Fulfill general education requirements for another degree
  • Strengthen your chances for admission or readmission to Mizzou

This enrollment option can be good for those students who need to improve their academic credentials in order to be admitted into the University as a degree-seeking student. You can take several individual courses as a non-degree student, do well in them, and you may become eligible for admission later.

You do not have to be admitted to the degree program in order to take individual courses. Whatever your educational goals, MU In The Evening can help you reach them!

Apply

  • Download and complete the appropriate “Direct Access Application for Admission” one-page form.
  • Mail or fax the form to MU Direct, 102 Whitten Hall, Columbia, MO 65211. You also may fax the form to Sandy Gummersheimer at (573) 882-5071. Sandy serves as adviser to all evening Direct Access students. There is no admissions fee for Direct Access.

Notes About Direct Access

Please read the back of the Direct Access form for policies.

  • Bachelor of General Studies students are given the first opportunities to register for classes; Direct Access enrollment is on a space-available basis.
  • Direct Access enrollments are processed in the order they are received, so submit your form as early as possible.
  • Class placement status for Direct Access students will be available the week before classes begin.
  • Once you are enrolled, you will receive a course schedule and invoice.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Direct Access admissions and enrollment process, please call Sandy Gummersheimer at (573) 882-2851.

Important information no matter which of the four paths you follow to get into Mizzou:

Immunizations
All students are required to show proof of compliance with the two-dose Measles Immunization Policy after you have been admitted to take courses at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The University requires that all newly enrolled MU students born after Dec. 31, 1956, comply with this policy. Given it may take some time to locate medical records if you have been out of school for a while, you should begin the process now. (You can get the shots free of charge from the MU Student Health Center.)

Student E-mail Accounts
All students are required to use their MU-provided e-mail accounts. All University correspondence will be sent to this account. You will receive instructions for setting up this account once you have been admitted to the University as either a degree-seeking or non-degree-seeking student. In order to access your student e-mail account, you will need to establish a “PawPrint ID.” When you are setting up your PawPrint ID, you will need the four-digit PIN number assigned to you by the University Registrar’s Office. You will receive this PIN number when you receive your student number, so please keep this letter! If you are a University employee, you will use your employee e-mail account.
