The Department of Health & Human Services, Food & Drug Administration, Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) is soliciting applications for a Supervisory Genetic Epidemiologist to lead a new team to evaluate the use of genetic and genomic technologies to improve biologic product safety. CBER is responsible for the safety and efficacy of vaccines, the blood supply and blood products, and cellular, tissue, and gene therapies that have a major impact on public health. The Office of Biostatistics and Epidemiology provides comprehensive statistical and epidemiological service to CBER programs. This includes statistical review of studies prior to licensure and post-licensure surveillance, research, and other analytical activities using epidemiological strategies to monitor the safety and effectiveness of biological products after licensure. The successful candidate must be an innovative thinker and should possess a collaborative and collegial spirit. Another major component of this position requires the selected individual to possess strong team, management, and leadership skills that will enhance overall performance and productivity while creating a vibrant work culture. He or she will lead the efforts of physicians, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and other scientists engaged in research and regulatory review of biologic products in this exciting new field to improve biologic product safety. The successful applicant will interact with leaders in other government agencies, academia, and industry, and represent CBER at national and international meetings, workshops, and Agency and Department discussions concerning the application of genetics and genomic technologies for the evaluation of biologic product safety. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. The development of this program provides a unique opportunity to be a leader in the development of the application of genetic and genomic technologies for biologic product safety using these new resources in this high-profile and exciting field.

Qualifications:
A medical degree from an accredited U.S. medical school (or from a foreign medical school with subsequent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)), and at least two years of residency training in a medical or other pertinent specialty: plus a masters degree or equivalent training in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, genomics, genome wide association studies, bioinformatics, or population genetics.

A Ph.D. in one of these fields with at least two years of subsequent work experience in research or other pertinent activities is also acceptable. A strong background in quantitative sciences is essential, with specific expertise in statistical genetics, genomics, genome wide association studies, bioinformatics, genetic epidemiology, or population genetics. Post-doctoral training and experience are advantageous.

Candidates for Civil Service or Commissioned Corps appointments must be U.S. Citizens.

Candidates may also be hired under Title 42 209 (g).

Salary Range:
The salary range (GS-15) is 120,830 - 153,200. Medical officer salary is equivalent to GP-0602-15 plus physician market pay up to $250,000. Salary will be set commensurate with education and experience. Additional bonuses may apply.
